Robert and T bring a new guest along to explore 1970s New York through the eyes of Chantal Akerman
Arthouse Drive-In is back with an avant-garde cinema classic, Chantal Akerman’s News from Home (1977). To mark the occasion, we’re bringing some sophistication to the program by welcoming our guest, visual artist and founder/editor of Cadmium Magazine, Colleen Kinslow.
News from Home presents a view of everyday life in New York City during the ’70s and is interjected by voiceover readings of the letters Akerman received from her mother in Belgium. While Akerman’s style of filmmaking has sometimes been described as slow, or even boring by critics, our gang finds a great poignancy in News from Home. Colleen details her love/hate relationship with the film and how it connects with her own experience of living far from home in big cities.
Join us in the drive-in as we look at New York City through Chantal Akerman’s eyes and experience a film that has no need for a traditional narrative to take you on a journey.
