From the safety of our cozy drive-in, learn about the ensemble movie that Ocean’s 11 wishes it was
In this episode of Arthouse Drive-In, Robert and T take a rose petal bath in the legendary French classique The Rules of the Game (1939) by Jean Renoir. Yes, the upholstery of the car will never be the same, but it was worth it for T’s budding film studies clout. Listen along as they unravel the complicated web of affairs and show how this almost century old classique still holds its relevance today.
Robert explains the pros and cons of auteur theory and explains how this film was incredibly controversial in France upon its release. T does his best to traverse the societal minefield of the aristocratic affairs that dot the landscape of this film and attempts to present a comprehensive synopsis without spoiling an almost 100-year old movie. And let me tell you, that ain’t as easy as it sounds.
Tag along as they crack open this rather pleasant egg of a movie, only to show the rotten yolk of society within. Some films just don’t pass the test of time, but much like an egg in the freezer, The Rules of the Game remains fresh even now.
