Day 4: Jim abandons his thesis that all Stephen King adaptations are great
Stephen King created his most ubiquitous monster with Cujo, but the film adaptation hardly lives up to its character’s legendary name. In this Hell to the King, Cinesthesia hosts Jason Michelitch and Jim Hickcox rip into Lewis Teague’s 1983 adaptation that features an increasingly slimy St. Bernard played by dudes in dog suits and mechanical dogs alike; Jim imagines an alternate universe where Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds stars a lone bird without agency; Jason reflects on revisiting Cujo for the first time as a new father.
Cujo marks the beginning of a stark decline in quality and the turning point where King films became a Hollywood product. Listen to the episode for Jim and Jason’s critique.
Join a filmmaker (and sometimes film teacher) and a film teacher (and sometimes filmmaker) as they venture into the dark heart of their own befuddled relationship to culture, the youth, the internet, friendship, love, hate, time, space and, of course: *m*o*v*i*e*s*. Come hear what we see.
