Simi Valley, California, punk band Strung Out stopped by Dante’s in Portland, Oregon, on Wednesday, October 10.
Jason Cruz, lead singer of Strung Out, looked to the crowd to help carry the choruses early in his set. The crowd boomed the lyrics back at him. Their relationship defined the evening. The band responded by cranking up their intensity. The crowd and the band showed appreciation for each other with big smiles and loud singalong choruses.
Guitarist Jake Kiley’s fast, melodic lead guitar riffs punctuated the band’s steam-rolling punk-rock sound. Rob Ramos, guitar and vocals, entertained the crowd not only with his crushing guitar skills and harmonic backup vocals but with jumps worthy of the NBA. Bassist Chris Aiken provided a spark onstage and took time after the show to visit with crowd members after the conclusion of the show.
San Diego’s The Bombpops opened for Strung Out and blasted the crowd with a powerful, classic punk sound with a little beer, piss, vinegar and speed. In an instant, they had everyone’s attention as guitarist and vocalist Jen Razavi ripped up the stage with her sharp lyrics, blazing guitar speed and polka dot top. Poli van Dam, singer and guitarist, took her skills down into the crowd during her set. The rocker swigged Budweiser onstage and with drummer Josh Lewis and bassist Neil Wayne, stunned the crowd with their high-powered music. If this is the future of punk, bring it on.
