Split Tooth writing will be included in a new anthology on Mumblecore and a collection of artwork from Mark Neeley
We are excited to have Split Tooth work featured in two new print collections that are now available for pre-order. The first is Extracted Frames, a compilation of artwork by animator Mark Neeley from Cereal Box Studio in Cincinnati, Ohio. The second release is Mumblecore: Exploraciones Sobre el Cine Independiente Norteamericano from Taipei Libros in Argentina.
Robert Delany interviewed Neeley for Split Tooth in August 2022, and their discussion is included in Extracted Frames to supply context to Neeley’s beautiful drawings and frames from his animated films.
As noted on Cereal Box’s website, “Neeley compiles frames and process imagery from his catalog of animation work in this new wide-spanning 120-page volume. Each frame has been lovingly translated for risograph printing alongside text by the artist, with a foreword by Aquarium Drunkard founder Justin Gage.”
Neeley himself says: “My hope is that Extracted Frames feels like a true art book. It’s for people, like myself, who always want to dig deeper. From the way it was sourced from hundreds of sheets of animation paper, to the risograph printing and silkscreen cover, [Cereal Box Studio] really did an exceptional job. It feels like a real piece of timeless ephemera. Despite animation being a film medium, I think it was a great experience to try to extract the frames, storyboards, and production art and see it all live in print.”

Edited by Álvaro Bretal, Milagros Porta, and Iván Zgaib, Mumblecore is one of the first books published on the subject and the first in Spanish. The collection features essays on individual filmmakers and Mumblecore-related topics, including Brett Wright’s essay “Disruptive Style: Frank V. Ross and Mumblecore,” a new, translated adaptation of his Films of Frank V. Ross essay series for Split Tooth. Also included in the book are interviews with Andrew Bujalski and Joe Swanberg.

Praise for Frank V. Ross and Brett Wright’s The Films of Frank V. Ross series:
“Frank Ross is one of a tiny number of essential American filmmakers. For the past two decades he has been writing the history of the present in a stunning series of form-breaking, truth-telling films that have their finger on the pulse of contemporary sexual and social mores, and communicate what it actually feels like to be alive today. Not the Hollywood version; not the fake-indie version — but the messy, confused, exciting drama of our hearts, minds, and souls, the strange spasmodic heartbeat of the ways we actually think, feel, and love.
“There is no better guide to Ross’ films than Brett Wright’s essays and interviews. Wright’s is the writing I myself turn to when I want to know more about Ross’ past, present, and future work and ideas.”
— Ray Carney, Professor of Film at Boston University and author of Cassavetes on Cassavetes
